Bull Bear Power

Alexander Elder's Bull Bear Power measures the strength of buyers and sellers by comparing the high and low with a 13-period exponential moving average.

Bull power is the distance of the high from the average, bear power the distance of the low from the average. Adding them gives a single value: positive when buyers prevail, negative when sellers prevail.

How it's calculated

Bull power = high − 13-period EMA; bear power = low − 13-period EMA. Bull Bear Power = bull power + bear power.

Worked example

The 13-period EMA is €50; today's high is €52.50 and the low €49. Bull power = €2.50, bear power = −€1: Bull Bear Power = 2.50 − 1 = +1.50, buyers prevail.

How to read it

Positive and rising values indicate that buyers are gaining the upper hand, negative and falling ones the opposite. The signal is more reliable if it goes in the same direction as the moving average.
